Key Aspects of Occupational Health and Safety towards Efficiency and Performance in Air Traffic Management

This paper/chapter deals with the key drivers for adopting and developing an Occupational Health and Safety System (OHS) with a special focus on air traffic management and traffic controller’s workplace. A such system includes regulation and legal compliance procedures, actions and monitoring for ensuring workplace safety, incentives and motivation for the air traffic controller and associate personnel health and wellbeing. By a systemic approach, the key characteristics of OHS towards air traffic management are presented, highlighting the key aspects for implementing a quality management system in air traffic control, which is the cornerstone of airport operation efficiency and productivity on one hand; and the nature of job and the intensive working environment is well recognised. Based on air traffic providers functional analysis the key occupational aspects for air traffic control are taken into consideration, providing the benefits for implementing quality management systems (QMS) and OHS is real business. Conventional wisdom is to highlight the importance for establishing and incorporating a modern custom-made OHS system in accordance with the requirements addressed by OHSAS 18001 to develop and implement a QMS for air traffic services. Contribution of this paper is to highlight the key priorities for managers and decision makers in field of air traffic services providers, depicting ways and recommendation for adopting an efficient path for implementing OHS in a QMS environment

Total quality - standardisation: implementations to forest industries (quality assurance)

The research work of the doctoral thesis deals with the growth of a model methodological frame for the incorporation of desirable characteristics of quality in the final products and the application of modern quality assurance systems in the enterprises of timber and furniture sectors in Greece. The first part of thesis deals with the review the existing Greek and international bibliography in the subjects of quality, control of quality, systems of quality, cost of quality, statistical control of quality, quality assurance systems and the quality function deployment method (QFD method). Also, this part contains a complete and analytic presentation of the structure and basic characteristics of Greek timber and furniture sectors. The second part of thesis deals with the methodological background upon which the research work is based. In particular, the following subjects are presented: a) the methodology of the special survey for the evaluation of maturity of Greek timber and furniture enterprises for the development and implementation of modern quality assurance systems, b) the methodology for the development of model frame for the detection and the incorporation of critical quality characteristics and relative technological parameters in the final products of Greek timber and furniture enterprises and c) the methodology for the development of model frame for the adoption and implementation of modern quality assurance systems in Greek timber and furniture enterprises. The third part of doctoral thesis deals with the presentation and analysis of results of the research work. In particular, this part deals with the following: a) presentation and analysis of results of the special study for the determination of level organisational and functional maturity of Greek timber and furniture enterprises for the adoption and application of modern systems for the management and assurance of quality, b) presentation and analysis of results of the research work for the development and pilot implementation of a model frame for the detection and incorporation of critical quality characteristics and relative technological parameters in the final products of Greek timber and furniture enterprises and c) presentation and analysis of results of the research for the development and pilot implementation of a model frame for the adoption and application of modern quality assurance systems in Greek timber and furniture enterprises. The fourth part of doctoral thesis deals with the review, discussion and presentation of main elements that resulted from the research work and the analytic presentation of all relative conclusions. The presentation of all parts of research work is supported by supplementary material that is appended in correspondent annexes that constitute integral part of the doctoral thesis.Το αντικείμενο της ερευνητικής εργασίας της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής σχετίζεται με την ανάπτυξη ενός πρότυπου μεθοδολογικού πλαισίου ενσωμάτωσης των επιθυμητών χαρακτηριστικών ποιότητας στα τελικά προϊόντα και εφαρμογής σύγχρονων συστημάτων διασφάλισης ποιότητας στις επιχειρήσεις των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα. Στο πρώτο τμήμα της διατριβής γίνεται ανασκόπηση της υπάρχουσας ελληνικής και διεθνούς βιβλιογραφίας στα θέματα της ποιότητας, του ελέγχου ποιότητας, των συστημάτων ποιότητας, του κόστους ποιότητας, του στατιστικού ελέγχου ποιότητας, των συστημάτων διασφάλισης ποιότητας και της μεθόδου ανάπτυξης της λειτουργίας της ποιότητας (μέθοδος QFD). Επίσης, στο τμήμα αυτό γίνεται πλήρης και αναλυτική παρουσίαση της δομής και των βασικών χαρακτηριστικών των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα. Στο δεύτερο τμήμα της διατριβής παρουσιάζεται το μεθοδολογικό υπόβαθρο πάνω στο οποίο στηρίχθηκε η υλοποίηση της ερευνητικής εργασίας. Συγκεκριμένα παρουσιάζονται και αναλύονται τα παρακάτω: α) η μεθοδολογία υλοποίησης της ειδικής μελέτης - έρευνας για τον προσδιορισμό του επιπέδου οργανωτικής και λειτουργικής ωριμότητας των ελληνικών επιχειρήσεων των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου για την υιοθέτηση και εφαρμογή σύγχρονων συστημάτων διαχείρισης και διασφάλισης της ποιότητας, β) η μεθοδολογία ανάπτυξης και πιλοτικής εφαρμογής ενός πρότυπου πλαισίου για την ανίχνευση των κρίσιμων χαρακτηριστικών ποιότητας και των σχετικών τεχνολογικών παραμέτρων των τελικών προϊόντων των επιχειρήσεων των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα και γ) η μεθοδολογία ανάπτυξης και πιλοτικής εφαρμογής ενός πρότυπου πλαισίου για την υιοθέτηση και εφαρμογή σύγχρονων συστημάτων διασφάλισης ποιότητας στις επιχειρήσεις των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα. Στο τρίτο τμήμα της διατριβής παρουσιάζονται και αναλύονται τα αποτελέσματα της ερευνητικής εργασίας. Συγκεκριμένα αρχικά γίνεται παρουσίαση και ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων της ειδικής μελέτης - έρευνας για τον προσδιορισμό του επιπέδου οργανωτικής και λειτουργικής ωριμότητας των ελληνικών επιχειρήσεων των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου για την υιοθέτηση και εφαρμογή σύγχρονων συστημάτων διαχείρισης και τη διασφάλισης της ποιότητας. Στη συνέχεια, παρουσιάζονται τα αποτελέσματα από την ανάπτυξη και πιλοτική εφαρμογή ενός πρότυπου μεθοδολογικού πλαισίου για την ανίχνευση των κρίσιμων χαρακτηριστικών ποιότητας και των σχετικών τεχνολογικών παραμέτρων στα τελικά προϊόντα των επιχειρήσεων των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα. Κλείνοντας το παρόν τμήμα γίνεται παρουσίαση της ανάπτυξης και πιλοτικής εφαρμογής ενός πρότυπου μεθοδολογικού πλαισίου για την υιοθέτηση και εφαρμογή σύγχρονων συστημάτων διασφάλισης ποιότητας στις επιχειρήσεις των κλάδων ξύλου και επίπλου στην Ελλάδα. Στο τέταρτο τμήμα της διατριβής γίνεται ανακεφαλαίωση, συζήτηση και παρουσίαση των κύριων στοιχείων που προέκυψαν από την έρευνα και αναλυτική παρουσίαση όλων των σχετικών συμπερασμάτων. Η παρουσίαση όλων των τμημάτων της ερευνητικής εργασίας υποστηρίζεται από συμπληρωματικό υλικό που επισυνάπτεται σε αντίστοιχα παραρτήματα τα οποία και αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο τμήμα της διατριβής
